Blessing of the Pets

Blessing of Pets 2008 017

Here at St. Matthew we have a tradition of Blessing of the Pets the first Sunday of October to honor St. Francis of Assisi.  St. Francis had a wonderful connection to nature, animals and the beauty of God’s creation.

The blessing is held at 2 p.m. on the grassy area behind the church. Our members and friends bring anything necessary for their pet to enjoy the time together (leash or crate, scooper bags.) There is a short outside worship service followed by light refreshments. We have blessed dogs, cats, lizards, hermit crabs, a donkey, goats, hamsters and even a cricket! All are invited to attend with or without a pet.

Our pets bring much joy to us. Their unconditional love and companionship enriches our lives. Caring for animals also helps teach children responsibility and aids in their socialization.
